Youth Inclusion Initiative was launched in summer 2021 as part of the New Jersey State Park Service’s workforce development program.

In 2022 the program expands to include nearly every program within the department, including:

  • Water Resource Management
  • Watershed and Land Management
  • Fish and Wildlife
  • Parks and Forestry
  • Site Remediation and Waste Management
  • Air Quality, Energy and Sustainability
  • DEP’s Executive Team

The initiative provides participating youth with opportunities to develop some of the technical skills necessary to pursue a career in environmental protection in New Jersey. The program focuses on providing opportunities to youth from communities that have disproportionately less open space or historically lack natural lands access. The youth are compensated via stipend for their work on projects across the Department.

For the 2022 Summer, three organizations have been selected to represent the urban environments of NJ. The organizations select New Jersey residents in the age range of 17 to 24 years old, and work collaboratively with DEP to build a workforce development curriculum that inspires a lifelong connection to the environment.

The youth will begin the summer initiative on July 5 starting with a week of introductory classes followed by six weeks of program media workforce exposure and end with an 8th week where the youth will put together an individual project for a ceremony on August 26.
