Waterloo Road Amphibian Crossing Project

Waterloo Road Amphibian Crossing Project

Township of Byram, Sussex County
NJ Department of the Treasury
Division of Property Management and Construction

Design Development Phase – Virtual Public Information Center

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The purpose of this project is to construct an amphibian passage system along a 1,200-foot section of Waterloo Road and the surrounding Allamuchy Mountain State Park and Waterloo Village lands in Byram Township, Sussex County. The project offers a long-term solution to the vehicle-caused mortality threatening a significant local population of amphibians that must migrate across Waterloo Road to reach their nearby vernal breeding pond each spring.

Improvements include:

  • Construction of four (4) specialized amphibian tunnels beneath Sussex CR 604 – Waterloo Road
  • Installation of guide fencing on both sides of the road to intercept and funnel amphibians towards the tunnels
